Giving Back to the Community

Nickerson Gardens
Watts/ Los Angeles, California

In sharing the same focus with supporting the kids in low to moderate income neighborhoods,

Athletes Helping Kids Foundation and The Los Angeles Lakers Foundation partnered to take on one of the most daring projects to date......the rehabilitation of the outdoor Recreation Center located in the heart of Watts. Both Foundations were acutely aware of the challenges pertaining to the local gang environment which is why the Gardens were in such disarray when we agreed to partner and tackle this problem together.

Our shared goal was to help support this community to get back some pride of ownership and provide a rejuvenated Recreation Center for the families and the kids who live and play there. So, along with much determination and perseverance we worked through the many obstacles that our team of professionals were confronted with on a daily basis. Once the gangs fully understood that we were there to help them gain back some pride for all who live at the Gardens, we had full participation of the community. We knew that once the outdoor Recreation Center was completed and turned around the kids would have a safer environment in which to play and be proud of again.

After one week of our professional Team going to work, we had accomplished building three full basketball courts, two half courts with new asphalt officially painted in basketball court guide lines and basketball posts and baskets. At the grand opening of the new refurbished outdoor Recreation Center, over 3500 hot dogs, chips and sodas were given out to the families who showed their support of our joint endeavors to make a difference in their neighborhood.

We are extremely proud to say that since this project was completed, it has brought a sense of pride to the neighborhood and the kids along with their families, who are now able to enjoy the outdoor Recreation Center. By working together to support this community, The Los Angeles Lakers, Council Woman Janis Hahn, 15th District and Jon Kirk Mukri, General Manager Department of Recreation and Parks, Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department have all been instrumental in making a better and safer neighborhood.
